The story of the Amityville Horror begins not with the supernatural, but with a brutal crime. On November 13, 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered six members of his family in their home at 112 Ocean Avenue, Amityville, New York. The crime shocked the nation, and DeFeo was later convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Although the murders were explained as a criminal act, the house itself soon gained a sinister reputation.
In December 1975, George and Kathy Lutz and their three children moved into the same house. According to their account, their stay quickly became terrifying. The family reported strange phenomena, including unexplained noises, doors and windows opening on their own, cold spots, foul odors, and an overwhelming sense of evil. George Lutz claimed to experience drastic changes in personality, including anger and insomnia, while Kathy reported visions and physical sensations.
After living in the house for only 28 days, the Lutz family fled, leaving behind most of their possessions. Their account was later documented in Jay Anson’s book The Amityville Horror: A True Story, published in 1977. The book became a bestseller and inspired multiple films, cementing the case as one of the most famous haunted-house stories in history. While skeptics have questioned the truth of the paranormal claims, the combination of real murder and alleged haunting continues to disturb readers and viewers worldwide.
